Abstract
Silver ion water has been known as an effective material for inhibiting and killing pathogenic bacteria. However, there are still few studies on silver ion water, especially those related to oral pH in dentistry. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of silver ion water against Streptococcus mutans in decreasing the environmental pH. This was an experimental and laboratory study with a control group post-test only design, using Streptococcus mutans stereotype C strain UA 159 incubated in brain hearth infusion broth (BHIB). Samples were divided into eight groups with several concentrations of silver ion water (2.5 ppm, 5 ppm, 7.5 ppm,10 ppm, 12,5 ppm, 15 ppm) and two control groups (silver ion water 0 ppm and aquadest). All groups were incubated for 24 hours in 37oC, and then their pHs were measured with a pH meter. The normality test showed a p-value of >0.05, meaning that the data were normally distributed. The Mann-Whitney test showed a p-value of <0.05, meaning that there was a difference in each group. Significant increases of pH were found in silver ion water of 12.5 ppm (mean pH 5.670) dan 15 ppm (mean pH 6.772). In conclusion, silver ion water of 12.5 ppm and 15 ppm can effectively inhibit the decrease in pH caused by the metabolism of Streptococcus mutans
